REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY: This signboard was seen at an illegal dumping ground. Whoever put up this sign has certainly found a good way to drive the cleanliness message home. The sign reads (translated): "I am insolent, indiscriminately throwing rubbish here".

Health: Wellness starts with detoxification
Loretta An Soosayraj

Feb 24:
Removing harmful toxins from the body via colon hydrotherapy can lead to a healthy lifestyle. LORETTA ANN SOOSAYRAJ writes.

A CENTRE which helps you rid your body of harmful toxins, and gives you a headstart on leading a healthy lifestyle. Sounds like a good deal? For a fee, it is, and that is what Pure Health Sdn Bhd is all about.

The centre provides free workshops to the public, with the purpose of giving health information.

Through these sessions, Pure Health hopes to assist people in reaching optimum health levels without having to resort to expensive supplements, and to avoid exorbitant hospital bills. Once you are aware of how your body works, and how your eating habits contaminate your body slowly, you can sign up for colon hydrotherapy, a programme designed to expel toxins from the body.

"We want to make people aware of the poisons that are in the body," says company director Brian Wong. He argues that the human body is designed to eat and digest vegetables, explaining that our typical Malaysian diet is terrible, which is why there is such a high congestion of toxins in the body.

"The main thing is detoxification, but it is only one part of the health programme. Nutrition, exercise and rest are also very important." Explains Wendy Tee, Wong's wife and also a company director: "The entire body is cleansed in the process, not just the colon.

"Many people join the programme because they feel tired all the time, or they have skin problems or other allergies. Toxins sit in the colon for years, and they are constantly reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

There is either a five- or seven-day programme, after which there must be a focus on diet and exercise. Even if you take lots of nutrients, your body will not be able to absorb them if all your pipes are clogged."

The colon is the site for water and nutrient absorption in the body and it can store a vast amount of faecal material. This material can become toxic if not removed from the body. Most people on average hold between 2kg and 4.5kg of faecal material, which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites and can lead to chronic constipation, among other ailments.

"So it really is a case of better out than in," says Wong.

The programme is not, he stresses, about treating diseases, but rather preventing them as far as possible.

The reported benefits, based on the anecdotal evidence offered by their regular customers -- or clients, as they are known at the centre -- include increased levels of energy, disappearance of aches and pains, and restored bowel movement. The centre has more than 200 clients, both local and foreign.

This is a wellness centre, not a weight-loss centre, although many customers do lose weight in the process.

Tee lost about 20kg in the course of two years since discovering the therapy. "If you choose health first, you will reach your ideal weight. I feel much better, and I don't fall sick anymore," she says. "I can eat as much as I like now, and I don't put on weight. And I look years younger than I used to!"

According to Wong, part of the programme includes avoiding solid food. Apple cider vinegar and wheatgrass juice are part of a specifically designed diet, which ensures carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals continue to be taken in, only in liquid form.

"And for a specified period, you must stay away from strenuous exercise and stressful situations because you have to allow your body to heal," he says, "so as to allow the nutrients to be absorbed properly.

"Don't wait until your body breaks down before cleansing it. I would recommend colon hydrotherapy at least once a year ... it's just like servicing your car regularly. It's all about prevention.

"If you don't have health, you don't have anything."

Water infusion to clean your colon

PURE Health Sdn Bhd offers many programmes, courses and products with the goal of detoxifying the body, cleaning out parasites and for general wellness. One of the main modalities offered involves colon hydrotherapy.

Colon hydrotherapy is a cleansing therapy which involves the infusion of warm purified water into the colon via the rectum. Each session lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, and costs RM300 per session. There is also a five-session package costing RM1,250. The specifically formulated liquid diet comes at RM320.

Other programmes such as Lymphatic Drainage, Infrared Therapy ranges between RM120 and RM180 per session while each Oxygen Therapy session costs RM30. The workshops are free.
